Engineering Explorations

Explorations is an annual event held on the Monday evening of March Break. At Explorations about 1000 grades 6, 7 and 8 students and their parents are taken on tours (lasting about an hour and a half) of Engineering displays. Each visitor sees a mix of displays from each of the many departments within Engineering.

The objectives of Explorations are to excite students about engineering in hopes of sparking an interest in continuing their math and science studies throughout high school, to provide the public with an opportunity to see what we do at the University of Waterloo, and to promote the Faculty of Engineering.

Here's what some past visitors to Explorations thought:

Parent of grade 6 student
"This was an eye opener for our son. He enjoys building anything with his hands and is forever inventing things. I think for the first time he has realized that you can apply this in school."
Parent of grade 6 student
"Patrick and his little sister were inspired by this programme. They were so excited by what was presented to them that they went home took apart any old toys/electronics and are trying to build a robot. I thought this programme was wonderful!!!!!!! There was only one display which was disappointing because it was too short."
Student grade 7
"I thought each presentation was very interesting. Now I'm thinking of being some kind of engineer."
Student grade 8
"Each year the tours get better and interesting. I look forward to going to this event every year"
Parent of grade 8 student
"I find that this is a great opportunity to expose my child to the science/technology/engineering world."
Parent of grade 6 student
"Very interesting and extremely educational to see the practical side of engineering. It gave me a greater appreciation for the program, which is more varied than I expected. It was refreshing to see the enthusiasm displayed by everyone while doing the demonstrations. We've already made plans to return next year and see more."
Parent of grade 7 student
"Generated a lot of talk after the presentations & excited him about future study ideas."
